Abstract
The Carte du Ciel was the first international project having the ambition to photograph the whole sky vault. It was launched in 1887 by Paris Observatory and 18 observatories from both hemispheres participated in the project. This chapter describes the genesis and the evolution of the project and how it paved the way to the establishment of the International Astronomical Union in 1919.
