Titolo: | MAGNETOSPHERE OF JUPITER-SATELLITE INTERACTIONS | Autori: | Nichols, Jonathan Bunce, Emma Cowley, Stan Roth, Lorenz Jackman, Catriona MURA, Alessandro Grodent, Denis Bonfond, Bertrand |
Data pubblicazione: | 2018 | Abstract: | The MAJESTIC project will use data from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the NASA/ISA Juno mission to Jupiter, the ESA XMM-Newton High Throughput X-ray Spectroscopy Mission (XMM), and the NASA Chandra X-ray telescope to study the mutual electrodynamic interaction between Jupiter and its moons, how these processes are affected by external drivers, and the overall control such interactions exert on the global dynamics of Jupiter’s magnetosphere and atmosphere. The members of the Consortium have significant internationally-recognised leadership in the study of the magnetospheres, satellites and auroras of the outer planets. MAJESTIC will leverage European leadership in this unprecedented era of exploration of Jupiter, exploiting data from the Juno mission as well as the existing archives from HST, XMM, and Chandra. Together, these represent a wealth of data from European spacecraft and instruments regarding the auroras and magnetospheres of Jupiter and its satellites covering two solar cycles. We will study the effects on the satellites of their interaction with Jupiter’s rapidly rotating magnetosphere, and how mass loading controls the structure and dynamics of Jupiter’s enormous magnetosphere. We will examine in detail the powerful and complex jovian auroras and unravel the effects of solar activity on the system. This project will produce publicly-available high-level data products and software tools that will add value to existing archives, as well as publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with a strategic aim of preparing for future missions to Jupiter such as ESA/JUICE. Through the production and exhibition of an immersive planetarium and 3D experience along with a series of educational materials, the project will also bring to the public the majesty of Jupiter’s auroras. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12386/33340 | Fulltext: | embargo_20300201 |
