Title: | Trade-off study: heater power vs TES shunt resistance | Authors: | D'ANDREA, MATTEO MACCULI, CLAUDIO |
Issue Date: | 2019 | Abstract: | The tests on the CryoAC DM (AC-S10) [RD1] have shown that thanks to the heater it is possible to operate the detector at a 50 mK thermal bath with low bias currents, thus reducing by one order of magnitude the total dissipated thermal power at cold (dominated by the shunt contribution). On the other hand, this has the effect to slow down the detector, increasing its dead time. In following discussions, it has been suggested that increase the shunt resistance could have the same effect. In this context, the IPRR RID no. 31 (Trade-off for CryoAC) has requested a trade-off study between the baseline CryoAC proposal (involving the use of the heater) and possible different solutions. To proper deal with this study it is necessary to assess the performance of different CryoAC configurations in terms of the CryoAC requirements (energy threshold, total dissipated power at cold, dead time). To do this, it is important to evaluate the detector response up to the saturation regime, since this is strongly related to the resulting dead time. To go beyond the usual small-signal-approximation paradigm, we have decided to numerically solve the microcalorimeter thermoelectric equations without any approximation, developing a preliminary detector simulator that has been used to perform this trade-off study. Though several parameters of the simulator need to be refined (i.e. the system thermal capacitance, the TES-absorber decoupling conductance, the efficiency of reading the phonon signal in the TES which accounts for the fraction of the absorbed energy transformed in phonons,…), the results are worth of note and provide a path to properly operate the detector by applying power from the heater in combination with an increased shunt resistance, thus reducing the total power dissipation at cold. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12386/35227 | Fulltext: | reserved |
