Abstract
This report describes the activities performed in the extension (Contract Change Notice - CCN) of the ESA project SSA-P3-NEO-XXII. This CCN aimed at investigating in more depth the required hardware and cost for European sensors to improve planetary radar capabilities in Europe. Additional activities to improve SW post-processing tools, and to resolve problems encountered during previous observations were performed. Moreover, additional NEO radar observations were successfully carried out.
The CCN activities are divided into three WPs:
- WP5000: Preliminary cost-benefit analysis on sensors upgrade (responsible: University of Helsinki)
Dedicated to the evaluation of different options of upgrading European radar facilities in terms of cost and time, and the scientific benefits of different klystron designs for the preferred option.
- WP6000: Improvement of data acquisition/post-processing and observations (responsible: INAF)
Dedicated to carry on with improvements in the capabilities in planetary radar data acquisition and analysis by the consortium team. Including the estimation of solutions that might support future continuous operations, and specific further studies on backends (diagnostics and optimization). An additional real observation campaign was successful performed on the asteroid 4660 Nereus using the bistatic radar DSS14 - Medicina.
- WP7000: Data reduction for astrometry and tools for observation planning (responsible: SpaceDys)
This task is dedicated to the implementation of a script for the computation of the Doppler shift, and of the corresponding astrometric data (range-rate), in a format compatible with the data processing tools available at INAF. A preliminary investigation on the effort that would be necessary to treat also frequency-modulated transmissions for the computation of time-delay (range) was also considered. Finally, improvements of the tools that were used during the P3-NEO-XXII project, which provide a list of good targets for a given sensor configuration, the expected SNRs, the visibility conditions, and the observational ephemerides in output, was also implemented.
