Abstract
With the help of unpublished archival documents, we add new details to the history of the astronomical instrumentationmade byG.B. Amici and used at the old observatory of Florence (the Specola). Amici built for the Specola the renowned 28-cm Amici I refractor, later transferred to the new observatory of Arcetri, and sold the institute a 4-inch refractor, apparently never used in Arcetri. After Amici's death, the heirs made a few attempts to sell the instruments found in his workshop. Among them the 24-cm Amici II refractor, which was bought for the Observatory in 1875. Its purchase was adviced by the astronomer G.V. Schiaparelli, which thought of the telescope more as a memorial to the work of Amici and his successor G.B. Donati than a scientific instrument necessary in Arcetri.
