Abstract
The ESA project SSA-P3-NEO-XXII aimed to study how radar systems have been used to observe NEOs, and investigate possible developments in this field at European level. The Task 1 of the project was dedicated to the analysis of previous work in the area of NEO observations with radar systems, consisting in a review of the literature, of the main data processing techniques, and of the general functional requirements. The Task 2 of the project was devoted to the study of potential NEO targets for observations, and to select the ground stations to be involved, focusing on European and ESA stations, including radar, satellite tracking, radio astronomy, possibly suggesting areas of upgrade. The Task 3 of the project was dedicated to define and realize a real NEO observation campaign using radar systems, involving European sensors. Radar observations of the asteroids 2021AF8 and 2016AJ193 were successfully carried out by the bistatic radar DSS14-SRT/SDSA and DSS14-Medicina, respectively. These observational activities were done in collaboration with ASI and JPL/NASA. Data processing of the acquired measurements was also performed during the task, with the software tools developed by the INAF team.
